This technology has helped these people to have access to multiple types and levels of crops that can give them nutritional benefits. GM technology has given the opportunity to these countries for the development of such crops. Many examples can be presented that explain the benefits of this technology. Example 1: Golden rice project in many countries was viewed as a project that can help in recovering the malnutrition present in many countries. Deficiency of Vitamin A is viewed in many countries and people are dying because of malnutrition. Two million children die every year because they do not have access to vitamin A. the major illness identified in these children was the blindness and how the deficiency of these vitamins causes so many diseases. Humans can intake vitamin A from the precursor β-carotene; this is present in many plants and cereal grains that are not available to these people. This was the main aim of the golden rice project that focused on developing a crop that incorporates these vitamins in all in one crop.
Metabolic steps were taken so rice endosperm helps in allowing the synthesis of β-carotene. This reengineered rice contained moderate levels of β-carotene that helped in fulfilling the nutritional contents. After the analysis it was viewed that this rice contained 50% of RDA of the vitamin A that will help in fulfilling the nutritional aspects for 1-3 years old child. This project was developed for the countries that faced malnutrition. This technology in the beginning was provided free of charge and this required the agreement and negotiation of more than 100 scientist. The new crop golden rice gave substantial profits to the farmers and it also served as an impressive health solution for many problems present in the developing countries.
