In the article “Against School”, John Taylor Gatto clearly mentions the fact that education system is a machine which turns fresh-minded students into the set of students who resemble the mindless consumers. Gatto speaks about boredom and how it can be tackled by an individual by being imaginative and creative. Similar is the case with the current education system. It is designed in such a way that each student is conditioned to listen to others and to follow others. The current education system lacks creative interaction between the teachers and the students. The computers, course books and teachers have made the whole education system monotonous. It is believed that schools instill good qualities in students like obeying the law, conforming to the society etc. but the truth is that the current education system is producing individuals who are dependent on somebody else.
According to me, the current generation is smart enough to decide their future. The education system is monotonous but with the same basic education, the current youths are able to decide the field they want to choose without the intervention of the adults. In the present times, nobody can think of becoming a millionaire without having the basic education. The author gave the example of Edison in proving the point that he was an inventor who did not have proper education but still went on to become so famous which is very unlikely is today’s world. According to me the times have changed and the current world is more competitive and hence basic education does play a very important role.
