May fourth writers sought to go beyond the traditional background. The May Fourth Movement happened as demonstrations in Tiananmen Square where angry students from the Beijing University came together to voice their dissent on the exclusion of Chinese interests in the Paris Peace Conference. It was a nationalist formation which basically had its background and development in intellectual roots like that of the writers Lu Xun, Hu Shih, Mao Dun and more. Here there was made an attempt to understand Chinese contemporary literature rooted in its tradition and evolving at the same time. In this context this paper summarizes the main characteristics of the May Fourth writers, and analyzes one author’s work in specific. Some of the connecting characteristics of the writers of this movement were that their writing reflects the cross roads of change for Chinese literature. They were original, real and were also “progressive oriented”. Despite prediction of the writers such as Mao Dun who thought Chinese literature was heading towards Neo-Romanticism it evolved during this time into the ‘realism genre’. The literary journal New Youth connected these literati and was a catalyst for this mix of traditions and the new.
