In analyzing for what firms rely on when it comes to innovation, it can be argued from existing research perspectives that firms rely on many things in order to innovate. To rely on, as is understood in this research means to be motivated by or to be helped by. So some of the factors that motivates innovation or helps in innovation would be the knowledge within the organization (Birdthistle, 2006). The knowledge can be in the form of what is possessed by the persons involved in the business if it is a family business. It could be knowledge background such as their studies that would help them manage their business or knowledge on the competitive setting of their business or knowledge on what should be the next step in innovation etc (Neubauer, & Lank, 1998).
In the context of innovations, family businesses are set aside as being different when it comes to normal businesses because family businesses would have stronger ties when it comes between employees and other shareholders of the company, and also even in the way they network with suppliers and communities. There is a strong sense of a person relationship fostered between the family entities and this seals a level of trust that has to usually be worked for in the case of other business structures and forms (Ackermann, 2012; Aiken &Hage, 1971).The information flow is faster and better because of the collaboration formed between the people over the generations. This is from typical research understanding that family businesses are usually involved over more than one generation. This continuous involvement makes the family business have some interesting ideas developed over the years (Gronum, et al, 2012). The older part of the generation will have ideas that are more conservative and less risky. They will have ideas that would ground the business better. On the other hand, the younger generation would have ideas that are more interesting, varied and suited to the time. They will be more focused on what contemporary elements are and hence would be able to bring fresher ideas for innovation (Craig &Moores, 2006). Both generation will focus on common purpose also because they will want the company to stay in business and hence would encourage communication and knowledge sharing on a much larger scale. Furthermore, in the case of a family businesses when there are changes induced either by external variables or by internal variables, these businesses would be able to adapt and change quickly. The business structure is usually very less convoluted compared other business structures hence the need to wait on decisions and more is far lesser compared to other businesses (Ackermann, 2012). Also it has been noticed in research studies that where the business structure is more complex then, it can lead to more time for decision making and this could stunt the creativity process (Le Breton-Miller, and Miller, 2006). Also creativity would increase or be motivated to develop only when there is adequate communication and feedback. More specifically creative ideas as aligned to the needs of the business will develop only when the business is able to present itself in a communication structure where people are more open and respectful of one another. A family run business in this context is seen to have better communication because of smaller sizes of family run businesses and also the since these businesses usually have some form of a flat structure.
The workplace culture also has an impact on creativity and innovation. While this has been acknowledged in research, the effect of cultural environment or dimensions has not been researched much (Alegre, &Chiva, 2013). Most researches focus on how small scale family businesses manage creativity and innovation, or how cultural differences impact on small scale Chinese businesses (Birdthistle, 2006; Schubert, 2010). A connected discussion on these different aspects is the motivation behind this research. It is the research gap, that the work aims to solve.
