Dow Corning was sued by hundreds of women in the U.S. since the storm of controversy broke out. It was believed that silicone implants were the cause of many autoimmune diseases and adverse health effects. In 1992, the silicone fillings were banned by the Food and Drug Administration banned (FDA) for cosmetic surgery in the United States. After numerous studies and the technical development of these implants, these were allowed again in 2006. In Europe, they were never banned, but there is a quality seal of approval since 2001, to ensure the quality for the patients. As a representative of Dow Corning, I would like to use a media release to present three points to the Government and the world in response to the controversy and negative publicity. Firstly, to date, 10 million women worldwide were operated on using Dow Corning’s implants. Secondly, over the years, numerous studies have concluded that the cancer risk in women with breast implants is not higher than the average population. Thirdly, Breast prostheses also do not affect the diagnosis with mammography and sonography (Wollaston, 2011). Thus, the notion that Dow Corning’s implants cause breast cancer is completely untrue and has no factual support. Early in 2011 the FDA published data of a review of work and information on the safety of silicone implants, which indicate that the probability of occurrence of a very rare form of tumor – (ALCL anaplastic large cell T-cell lymphoma) would be higher in people with implants. With reference to the fact that the very rare cases that occurred were associated with most typical symptoms, the doctors should treat these symptoms with appropriate opportunity to consider. Other special screening or precautions are not derived from these findings (Australian Foreign Press, 2011).

Even though the company has faced a lot of unnecessary problems due to the controversy and rumors related to cancer risks, I still think that Dow Corning needs to spread awareness about the risks related to implants. As a representative of Dow Corning, I suggest that certain important information needs to be used to communicate with people about risks. Implants cause the formation of fibrous capsules, which can lead to the development of capsular contracture. The actual risks of breast implants have been mentioned here. The fibrous capsule may cause painful hardening of the breasts. This is particularly dangerous and cause large implants to create a thin outer skin that covers them (Macrae, 2012). In addition, this can set the asymmetry of breasts, as a consequence of bad surgery. To correct mistakes another operation is required. This problem does not cause an increase in the breast using autograft, because this process will be used by the body’s own tissue. Violation of the sensitivity of the nipple, of wounds, swelling, and displacement of the implants are the most common hazards during the operation. When a breast implant is placed, the body reacts by wrapping a thin sheet that isolates them and is called periprosthetic capsule (AFP, 2012). For small breasts, the breast enlargement simplifies the diagnosis, but the complication rate rises in the radiation therapy after breast prosthesis implantation (Meikle, 2011).
