Economic conception of Smith and sociological conception of Durkheim has several similarities with various differences in the term of the division of labour. In earlier days, there were only two classes of people. First one was called the ruling class and the second one was ruled class. The drastic changes in the societies gave a place for the concept of capitalism and industrialization. Some of societies accept it while some societies condemned it . Emile Durkheim and Karl Marx both were in the favour of capitalist societies. For Marx, the more crucial elements that played an important role in modern societies were class conflict and division of labour, which caused in alienation. Marx also explained about competition between employees, which alienated workers. In this case, inequality among workers and efforts of them to fulfil the personal needs is the most important factor that caused social stratification .

On the other hand, Durkheim used the norms, belief systems and values, which helped the societies to govern the people . Hence, for him, essential elements in the sense of modern society are different from the element described by Marx. Durkheim did not support the Marx and said that the societies should focus on the organic solidarity in the place of mechanical solidarity, while Max defined the need for mechanical solidarity for the growth of the society. It means that Max did not focus on the individualism or the dependence of one person on other people. However, Durkheim was defined its needs by explaining social cohesion under organic solidarity that needed individual’s dependence.
