The history of Korean’s Film and Drama culture dates back to 1898 when the motion pictures were first showcased to the public in Seoul. The fist person ever to create a film in Korea was Burton Holmes, a traveler and lecturer of American origin (KYOUNG-LAE KANG, 2008). Soon after the origin of this form of media entertainment in Korea, the theater Dongdaemun Motion Picture Studio was established in 1903 by Pak Sung-pil who was a keep supporter of Films. In the 1920’s, the era which later became to be popularly known as “The Golden Era of Silent Films “, most of the Korean film studios were being operated by people of Japanese origin. The concept of ‘Silent Films’ was very popular at that time and the first ever Silent Film named ‘ Arirang ‘ was created by Na Woon-gyu (John A.Lent, 1985). With the success of silent films the next challenge was to make films more appealing and entertaining to the Korean audience and develop Sound films, the first sound film developed in Korea named Chunhyang-jeon was directed by Lee Myeong and released in the year 1935 (Sue Jin Lee, 2011)    . Although the audience enjoyed Films in Korean language, the Korean language was banned from Korean movies due to the influence of Japanese powers over Korea at that time. After the submission of power of the Japanese from Korea, the Korean government tried to improve the circumstances of the Korean Film industry by exempting the Film industry from taxes. Shortly after this period the Korean Films      were made, which are till date considered to be the best films of the Korean Film industry till date The Housemaid by Kim Ki-young’s and Aimless Bullet by Yu Hyun-mok’s . Nevertheless, in the early 1970’s the governmental interference increased in the Korean film industry and plagued the flamboyance that the industry had developed over the previous decade. Fortunate enough, the government control was not practiced in the films made in North Korea (Hee-sook Shin, 2007).

In April 1973, the “Korean Motion Picture Promotion Corporation” (KMPPC) was established with primary goal of encouraging the Korean Film Industry, however the ulterior motive of the government for establishment of KMPPC was to exercise control over the Films being made. This movement turned out be counterproductive and degraded the quality of Korean Films thereby disappointing the local audiences and driving them away from theaters (Liza Vick 2010).
