Public Policy

The area of public policy making which predominantly governs the activities related to arts and culture of a specific area is known as cultural policy. It can range from having a micro view to a very macro view. Cultural policy per se is interlinked to the majority of issues existing in our society, for example, economic arrangement, relations amongst various races, relation amongst various nations, latest technology, various education programs and the development of the whole community (Cunningham, 2002). It happens right from the house of an individual to the table discussing international relations. The decision of a country to focus on promoting cultural tourism or the conservation of historic elements of any specific area is cultural policy. The convergence of all types of available media is cultural policy (Atlas, 2001). Generally a lot of people say that they do not have a cultural policy in place, while on the other hand they do have a number of cultural policies. The challenge in such an atmosphere is the process of developing a framework which clearly articulates a holistic vision for designing policies that recognize the interconnection between any component of existing culture, any form of art and the other parts of our lives.

Cultural policy, having a very miniscule budget as compared to other areas of interest for people, governs a sector which is immensely complex in nature. It requires a very large and different set of individuals along with organizations engaged with the various aspects of creation, dissemination and preservation of the cultural heritage of a particular place (Citizenship, 2002).
