One of the two important mainstays of the horror genre is sex and death. These aspects have been very nicely expressed in the silent movie “Nosferatu” of F.W. Murnau, which has in fact evoked different kinds of poetic responses. This has been considered as a masterpiece amongst all other work in this category.
This essay will try to address the various important aspects of the movie and try to understand the language and other culture related dynamics which have been used from time to time. This movie is a direct adaptation of the movie Dracula by Bram Stoker.
Legal rights and associated issues
The heirs of Stoker did not give Murnau the rights as required by him. An unfortunate incident, where the estate of Bram Stroker went forward and sued the producers of this film as it was found to be a direct adaptation of the character Dracula though it was unofficial. However, the court ordered to destroy all the copies of the film after they found significant evidences which favoured Bram’s case, though Nosferatu was not the first movie with a vampire story (Ghellal et al., 2014).Luckily, this kind of an order could not be enforced in the German cinema and had never happened before in history.
The film story is in the same lines as Dracula, the names have been changed. The central character of the movie, the character of Dracula which is Graf Orlok has been successfully played by actor Max Schreck. This character has been shown to be a corpse who is walking and possesses a bald head, pointed teeth with long fingernails. Other important characters are also altered, for instance, Jonathan Harker has been renamed to Thomas Hutter, Mina Harker changes to Ellen, Renfield becomes knocking and Van Helsing turns into Professor Bulwer.
