Decision making has to be such that an individual (the leader) will take in all the rational choices that are available for decision making in a given time and then will make the decision based on what would maximize the productivity of the company. Applying this to the case study, John Stokes should take in all the variables that were available at the given time and then make an informed decision. The CEO of the company states that some of the branches are not producing the desired results and it might be necessary to close those branches and monitor others such as Christchurch in future.
However, John Stokes who thinks big always does not desire to close the branches as he is currently focused on expanding the organization into Australia and internationally. In conflicting with the more rational proposition that was made by his CEO, Stokes is seen to be relying on past strategies, where he had thought big and which had yielded results for the organization. In theory this is called as a leader’s commitment to past decisions. A psychological commitment to past decision is one in which the individual would be motivated to justify their past decision making even when faced with a situation where they have to change their standpoint (Crosby, & Taylor, 1983).
The leader might end up committing more resources for a cause when clearly the leader needs to alter their course of action. Additional commitment of resources might be a waste or even worse could lead the company into an even more negative spiral. This negative cycle that a company might be pushed into is called as the escalation of commitment.The escalation of commitment is a risk in itself as it leads the decision maker to think that the commitment or investment of resources would by itself correct a situation (Hayes, 2014). As the teleological theory shows it is necessary to pursue alternate paths in order to meet the end point. However, when the business is already losing financially in the Southern units, committing more finances into the Southern Units because Stokes wants to focus on expansion would not be successful adaptation. It could lead to a failure in evolution. Escalation of commitment of risk is basically a situation where a decision maker believes that an investment would result in positive outcomes; however, it only leads to disappointing results (Bazerman, & Moore, 2009).
