Pros of using a digital currency like the retail CBCC would reduce high price volatility. This is common to many other implementations of cryptocurrencies. Retail CBCC along the lines of Fedcoin would eliminate the high price volatility that is common to cryptocurrencies. Secondly, use of digital currency as Koning (2014) argues will provide relief on the zero lower boundaries that are established on central bank money. It would be possible to pay interest on the digital currency same as with normal currency which is yet another pro for adoption. An additional implication is that when retail CBCC or similar digital strategies were employed, it could so happen that depositors would no longer be able to hold central bank money without paying some form of negative interest rates (Bech & Garratt, 2017). In addition to presenting an alternative to cash dealing, the use of digital currency will introduce options for expanding monetary policy choices (Positive Money, 2017).

Similar to the pros, there are cons in using digital money. For instance, in the case of the retail CBCC, there are risks for banks as bank runs could happen more frequently. Banks usually keep a small portion of their money as cash assets. Banks are traditionally fractional reserve systems. People only had withdrawn some amount of cash at a time and deposit amounts of cash, too. In this situation, a bank run is where a large number of customers in a bank end up withdrawing funds simultaneously. This will create issues of solvency for the bank. When digital currencies are used, the issues of solvency will increase because of increase in bank runs. Customers using the digital system will be able to withdraw large sums of money more frequently. When threatened with a bad banking situation or economic crises etc, it could be possible for banks runs to hit a peak. Where the public are able to convert their commercial bank holdings into risk free central bank liabilities in troubled times, they would opt to do so (Tolle, 2016). Anonymity becomes a concern (Kahn et al., 2005).
