Difficult and more impracticable it is to live with others, even more easier said than done and more impractical it is to live without them, in absolute loneliness. The fact is that loneliness is unpleasant is observable. The view that humans are inherently social creatures is no longer contestable, but what accurately this implies for lives and societies is not completely valued either. Moreover, the view that loneliness plays an important function for humans just as do physical pain, hunger, and thirst and that understanding this function and its effects on social cognition holds some of secrets to healthier, wealthier, happier lives is not so apparent. Last but not the least, human loneliness is identical to feeling unsafe as individuals feel threatened in social environment due to loneliness (Cacioppo and Patrick, 2008 p. X-XI). In the light of these beliefs, the purpose of this essay is to critically discuss the issue of “Human Loneliness” with the case of John Steinbeck’s (1965) novel “Of Mice and Men”. The three aspects of human loneliness are identified and further with reference to novel’s selected quotes, these three aspects are critically evaluated. These three issues are loneliness is unpleasant, loneliness as physical pain and loneliness is identical to feeling unsafe.
