Chinese residents in Canada are in an English speaking country and have to experience a culture which is extremely different from their own. The broad eastern culture is somewhat adjusting for eastern countries but the eastern and western ones are more different than similar leading to difficulties in adjustments.
The first thing the Chinese residents must do is to learn the culture, language and the lifestyle of the Canadian country before their primary working commitment starts. This will ease the sudden shocks that they might experience from the Canadian culture. Learning the English language is easy and there are multiple classes in Canada which provide such services. Learning English can in fact make the chances of getting hired in a good or a deserving post brighter than when the candidate does not know English or knows little. The second thing to be done is to assess the quality of the earlier Chinese migrants and study the reasons behind their failure or slow economic progress in Canada. This will give hints into the activities that are to be avoided and those to be embraced. When the Chinese resident unlearns something and learns new skills, it becomes easier to find a suitable job and their consistency in employment increases with time. There is an inherent value of an individual which comes from his or her national origin of the human capital (Friedberg, 2000). Thus, the Chinese residents in Canada must build on their national human capital and use the relevant skills and knowledge at workplace. This may make the experience less discriminating and more fulfilling.
Regarding healthcare and other services, the elderly are found to be discriminated based on cultural incompatibility, personal attitudes of employees, and administrative problems in delivering healthcare (Lai & Chau, 2007). To overcome this, it is better to use one’s own medicine on which the Chinese have a lot of confidence. The ancient medicine concept of the Chinese is very popular and is proven to be effective in many senses. Lai & Chappell (2006) in their research have found out that elder Chinese immigrants have been using traditional Chinese medicine along with western health services in Canada. One of the reasons is the lack of political will provide proper healthcare to the elder Chinese population. Thus, using medicines of their national origins can make the healthcare seclusion less of a problem to face.
The education and culture is extremely difficult to grasp and this requires a will to learn the new culture. In such a scenario, the Chinese residents must learn the underlying culture of Canada and try and embrace it in their daily conduct. The eagerness to learn a new culture and then embracing it may even make the Chinese feel more included and belonging to the country. This can also support their inclusion in hiring candidates and avoid discrimination. Thus, learning something and embracing it willingly can lessen the discrimination because the Canadians will feel that the Chinese have learned and accepted their culture making them their own and not of some secluded origin.
