To climb Mount Everest, it is important to have the physical agility and the mental determination. When climbing Everest as a team, it is important for the team to have a team player and the leader. These require the team members to be ethical and have a level of leadership to achieve the intended result. This effort was undertaken by our team where I played the role of the photographer. This role required me to be a part of the climbing process. I was a team player and a leader.

  Section 2: Leadership

  Description of Problem/Issue

To climb Mount Everest is physically an arduous task. It could also be described as an impossible process for some people. Only few people manage to reach the top of the summit. The weather conditions prove to be hazardous to the people. The issues that were felt by us other than the obviously difficult weather condition were the health condition of the groups’ environmentalist. The team leader, physician, marathoner and photographer were in good health condition. The environmentalist was an asthmatic patient who required physician check-up to be cleared to undertake the mission. The theories of contingency such as the path-goal theory and Burns Transformational Leadership Theory were used to address this issue. This required the people in the team to be leaders and function as a motivating factor for the other members of the team. These were intricate tasks that needed to be dealt with emotional determination. Management Research Evidence

The Path Goal Theory is used when something needs to be completed in short time or in emergent conditions. This theory asks the members of the team to act with group participation that would make it more amenable for the people to reach their goals. There is the aspect of common sense and contingent factors that are required to be applied in this situation. The issues with this theory are that the group members can often assume what is good for all the members. The leader needs to be ideal leader who would guide the people (Malik, Aziz & Hassan, 2014). Otherwise, the chances of failure are higher. The leaders must be rational and not push the people to delusional standards. The team members should be in physical danger at no point owing to the decision that is made by the leader. In the case of applying Burns Transformational Leadership, the people must adhere to the higher road for long term gains. These enable in fostering of the social values for the individual purpose. These are based on the coherent policy that underpins the leadership. This theory is set apart from the other forms of leadership theories. It assumes that the leader must adhere to the most important value system of leadership. This theory enables the people to look beyond the short-term gains and looks for ways to bring paradigm changes (Kark & Shamir, 2013). There is fostering of people developing ideologies for better societal systems. The issue with this theory is that it can be idyllic and not be applicable to the people. In the case of emergency situations, these theories will not be useful. The specific ways as to how the leaders must develop their ideology are not made aware.

The combination of contingency theory and transformational leadership are explored to explain about the nuances of addressing this situation.
