  Classification of Juvenile Arsonists

According to the reports of the US Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Delinquency and Prevention, the juvenile arsonists can be divided in three different groups. The first is curiosity fire setters. This kind of situation includes children who are below the age of 8 years. They usually lit fire accidently and do not have any intentions of setting fire. The second group is called as Intentional Fire setters. This group includes children who are between the ages of 8-12 years. Such children have motive for their crimes but it is linked with their mental disorders and psychological problems. The third group is called as the Crisis fire setters. This group includes the children of age 13 years to 18 years. Such arsonists have committed many crimes and arsons. The motive of their crime is related to “intentional criminal behaviour” or the psychological disorder (Siegel, 2011).

Juvenile Arsonists and Rational Choice Theory

Rational Choice theory has become the hot topic in sociology, law, political science as well as criminology. Rational Choice Theory is considered to the strongest theories of criminology. This theory had been helpful in providing the explanation of the causes behind different crimes. The theory is also helpful in providing clear logical order, which assists in broadening the scope of understanding (Cornish & Clarke, 2002). Almost every crime could be explained with the help of rational choice theory. The rational decision making process of the arsonists is clear in connection to the selection of place, victim, property and time. The Rational Choice theory is also effective in evaluating the behaviour of juvenile arsonists, by paying attention towards the main factors, which he or she had used in making the decision of committing arson. This also helps in understanding whether the arson was intentionally done or not. Thus Rational Choice theory plays an important role in cases of fire setting. It is also seen that the juvenile commits such crime even after knowing the consequences of such crimes but have made rational choice to go against law and pose damage to someone’s property.
