Freud hit his hand on his forehead and said, “I will be darned! That is why you look so familiar! It is a pleasure meeting you as I have been greatly influenced by your work and philosophy about the human nature”. Rousseau smiled back at him and said, “It is a pleasure for me as well. So what are you thinking about my dear friend?” Freud replied, “I am thinking about what has happened to man today. It is impossible to escape the impression that people commonly use false standards of measurement — that they seek power, success and wealth for themselves and admire them in others, and that they underestimate what is of true value in life.” [3]
Rousseau shook his head, as if he had been thinking about the same thing and said, “Man is born free; and everywhere he is in chains.” [4]
Freud looked at Rousseau as if he completely understood what he was saying. To a passer-by, the men would look like two old friends catching up while they were engrossed in a learned conversation about how the world is turning out to be, humanity and how the lust for power and money has led mankind into its own destruction. Freud exclaimed, “A man like me cannot live without a hobby-horse, a consuming passion — in Schiller’s words a tyrant. I have found my tyrant, and in his service I know no limits. My tyrant is psychology – it has always been my distant, beckoning goal and now since I have hit upon the neuroses, it has come so much the nearer.” [5] Rousseau understood that no matter how much Freud tried, he would never get away from thinking about the human nature and psychology. He exclaimed in his researchers that the main dedication of individuals and societies are “self-preservation” and to try and obliterate them is illogical and ineffective. He further claims that in doing so, it would “be to conquer nature, to redesign God’s creation” [6]. Rousseau proclaimed that God had bestowed the concept of needs and wants in man that eventually led him to become selfish at certain occasions. He also claimed that regardless of the selfless pleasures a man gets to enjoy, it is not only because of the command of God Himself and because “there is nothing like it written on the heart of man, and what God will have a man do, He does not leave to the words of another man. He speaks Himself; His words are written in the secret heart.”
