The serious research and development in lab on chip technology began only after its successful use on Gas Chromatography. The 1990’s saw an era where some serious research work took place on lab on a chip. The technology promises to bring a major revolution because of its compact size, multi functionality and high specificity. Currently the researches are done in developing new types of chips which could be lower in price and thus can be used in more number of fields (Yehya, 2010). Earlier labs on chip were basically micro machined on silicon or glass and these substances are quite expensive. But currently new research and development have invented chips designed on plastic and these can be used and thrown away thus preventing contamination chances. Again many companies are developing chips on which more diagnostics can be carried out with proper accuracy. The scientists in Europe are currently developing more portable lab on a chip with special feature of optical detection system. This will create more opportunities of this technology for clinical uses. Thus more and more research is expected to come up and bring some unique changes in the world of technology (Herold, 2009).
