Primark is a textile retail chain with headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. Primark stores usually have several thousand square feet of retail space. Textiles are sold at very low prices. The largest branch is located in Manchester, England with a sales area of 9,300 m², spread over three floors. Founded in 1969, Primark is active in many European countries and now has 219 branches with about 27,500 employees. In fiscal 2010, it reached a turnover of EUR 3.1 billion. In the Republic of Ireland all stores operate under the Penneys name. Primark is a subsidiary of the British food company Associated British Foods (ABF) and is ultimately driven by the Weston family of Wittington Investments. In June 1969, the company opened its first store in Dublin’s Mary Street. Within a year, more stores were opened in the Dublin area, and before 1971, the first store outside Dublin was opened in Cork (UK Business Park, 2011). The first British businesses were opened in 1974 in the high streets in Derby and Bristol. 1984 saw the purchase of five Irish Woolworth stores instead of the first multiple takeover. After 1992, the BHS (British Home Stores) withdrew from Ireland, and major flagship stores were acquired in the O’Connell Street in Dublin (Leadership, 2010). In 2000, when the company C & A withdrew from the UK, Primark acquired eleven of the branches (Kehoe, 2006).
