I am in full support of the Stuart Halls’ argument that power and classification in today’s modern world work together. Earlier, the people used to differentiate themselves form other by joining a certain community or culture, but with the emergence of politics in government formation and activities, certain politicians have led to the differentiation of humans. They believe that classification maintains the order, but I think it is right opposite of the same. As much as classification will be, much more perceptions and thoughts will arise. Race is a floating signifier after all (Hall, 1997). Race does not point to any agreed upon meaning or to any actual object, it is the creation of humans and must signify to humans only. But it is a fact that the people today cannot think without classification, classification on the basis of race or on the basis of cultural orientations.
The book Orientalism by Edward Said, clearly shows that Orientalism, patronizing perceptions of the Western societies and depictions of the East including North African, Asian, and Middle Eastern societies, is based on the representations of culture. On the other hand, the book named “The Wire: Urban Decay and American Television”, edited by Tiffany Potter and C. W. Marshall, clearly demonstrates how social relations and society are shaped by and shape the practices of modern media (Potter & Marshall, 2009). I believe modern media, right from its inception, has been utilizing rhetoric process like public argumentation to bring about political, social, and cultural changes as they has essential and ample amount of resources available.
For centuries, the idea that race is closely related to the biological genetics has been in debate in between people. Race is nothing but the whole human kind, but most surprising thing is human themselves are dividing lines between social backgrounds, culture, and color from years. The ideas put forward by Stuart Hall in the video are in full opposition of this relic. The video significantly demonstrates a different point of view or perception of race, which I believe is adequate and correct. As Stuart Hill tried to do with his arguments in the video, I also believe that it is the time to gain a better and rational understanding of racial semiotics and to induce a solution towards racism.
