The living room is a place for all social activities and experiences a number of visual tasks that are performed there. It is not enough to conclude that living room lighting must not be taken as only a purpose of navigating oneself in different directions. Primarily the living room requires a television to be viewed individual or collectively. This would require a specific lighting and support visual activity of watching television. In addition, there must be light for small interactions, large gatherings like a party or a debate (Edvard, 2014). Reading a book if there is a bookshelf in the room, or simply being alone and needing some personal time which would require a specific lighting to adjust to personal moods and attitudes. Karlen and Benya (2004) also admits and suggests that living room, because of the broad functions it witnesses, needs a variety of lighting approach which supports casual eating and drinking, music, television, an art collection for a prominent display, and sometimes a home office at the corner with its necessary equipment and stationery. Assuming that the room will often be cleaned by someone, it is necessary to have effective lighting which reached every corner and highlights the dust on it (Getinteriordesign.com, 2006). The lighting also needs to support the visual tasks of small children who constantly require navigating themselves in all directions. Thus lighting, though assumed and perceived to be a simple and negligible requirement, it does prove its importance when some of the visual tasks become difficult to perform.
The present lighting as seen in the picture is adequate enough to perform basic functions of reading, watching TV, listening to music, chatting with a single person or even a group of friends. The light is more focussed on two corners of the room and the seating area or the sofa. The number of lights is probably more than sufficient for a conversation, and may not require more than two. The seating areas are being positioned to receive direct sunlight and may not require electrical lights when not desired, which is a good idea.
