There is no uniform availability of legitimate professional identity amongst all workers and occupations. A number of markers like level of training and education, sexuality, gender, class, race, certifications and embodied features can help in keeping workers as well as work over margins. One such issue of legitimate professional identity is found in occupation of massage therapists. One key concern with respect to this profession is that even though providing massage therapy is not a sexual work, the labourers and labour of massage are often seen being sexualized because of a number of factors like labour force consisting mostly females, along with its past relation with prostitution (Fleming, 2007). Professionalism is known to be appealing for employees, occupations and organizations. The term is known to be conjuring a number of elements like worker autonomy, high salaries, and social prestige. Therefore, a number of workers, irrespective of their occupation, are motivated for the achievement of professional status.
Good performance of job and fairness at workplace ends up going hand in hand. Management of discrimination helps in attracting, motivating and retaining the staff members, and helps in the enhancement of organizational reputation as the employer (Sullivan, 2014). Elimination of discrimination helps in providing an equal opportunity for working and for developing their skills. Employers should consider if the procedures and policies of the organization respects the sensitivity of sexual orientation amongst individual and the significance to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
In her research paper, “With(out) pleasure: Desexualisation, gender and sexuality at work”, It has been stated by Katie Sullivan (2014) that pressures towards desexualisation of organization in massage therapy maintain discrimination, sexual harassment and heteronormativity. Based on this statement, this essay will focus on critically discussing this argument and hence, will critically discuss on the issue of sexuality in workplace.
