It is not only the learning about different factors that must be considered in achieving sustainability, but it has also been realised that sustainability accomplishment require certain important skills to be possessed by managers. In this context, I have also tried to develop certain important managerial skills within me so that I can account for sustainable contribution towards the organisation in which I will work in future. The most significant skill that I have focused towards my learning is the leadership skills during the course. This is mainly because I have learned that there is a need for collaborative efforts from all the employees within organisation in achieving sustainability and this can be positively achieved by way of developing leadership skills and abilities. This led to my focus during the course towards achieving positive level of leadership ability development so that I can account for better management of sustainability (Skills to build a career in sustainability, 2014).
A brief understanding of the environmental condition is essential and this requires proper assessment capabilities on the part of sustainable managers. Lesca (2013) has indicated that the sustainable manager must possess the ability in terms of performing the environmental scanning so that sustainability practices can be undertaken. In this context, I have focused towards enhancing my environmental scanning abilities during this course. This has been ensured by me in the form of participating in group work and tasks whereby activities in the form of minimal consumption of scared resources, responsible disposition of wastes, doing tasks that accounts for having lower impact on the environment etc are considered. Being environmentally responsible is a great way in achieving sustainability and as a result, I have given utmost importance in this area so as to become a potential contributor towards sustainable performance.
The impact of this course is likely to be positive on me from the point of view of my future development. This is mainly because sustainability is an important concept that is gaining regular importance from public at large. With the increasing impact over the environment and the issue of climate change, there has been the need to act in a sustainable manner by businesses. Their sustainable performance is a key to achieving success. This higher level of importance towards sustainability has been a key factor that is gaining increasing recognition within businesses, and a better understanding of the ways in which sustainable development by business regarding their processes would be a competitive advantage. This would positively affect my overall chances of performing well in the organisation and in devising strategies aimed at achieving positive sustainable performance.
