Slavery has been a curse to society and many black people have lived the hell of slavery. Northup was one of them. This film shows the different side of the slavery. Where some educated and smart people, who could have gained success in life, were forced to live a life of an enslaved person. This movie serves as the reliable source for the reference of slavery.
He is shown as a strong person, who could speak about all aspects of slavery to the higher authorities; this shows his determination and knowledge. His knowledge and deep absorbance of the environment could be seen when he describes the personality of the slave-trader and informs about his name and even about the pen and the place where the trader hides it. As the result, all the proofs were considered as true and Northup was freed and the slave trader could not deny that he forcefully enslaved Northup.
The message that movie provides is that, when a person is forced to become a slave, he suffers cruelty, physical violence and emotional aches and degraded (Northup, 20). However, he is not the only one who suffers; the masters of the slaves are also emotionally desensitized and morally degraded. The enslaved people losses their family legacy and could enjoy joys of human life. 12 years of a slave shows the evil faces of man.
All these conditions filled the people with anger, rage and hatred and were influenced to fight for their rights to freedom. It is very difficult to ignore the inhuman behavior and anger the enslaved people were treated with (Franklin & Moss, 288-289). It also impossible to forget that how white people enslaved black, considered them to be lower than them and treated them as machines, who could work without stopping. Enslavement did not provided any kind of economical, social or legal justifications for the slaves; still it serves to be an important part of the history (Franklin & Moss, 288-289).
