Rousseau claimed that due to an individual’s selfish needs, the consequences from such selfish actions cannot be cured unless they gain experience from its inevitable outcomes. Moreover, he claims that egotism of an individual cannot be cured in the first place, let alone to try such methods of improvement. However, from an early stage when an individual develops such characteristics, it is hopeful to overcome the powerful affect of selfishness rather than letting it develop into the individuals personality. He further explains this phenomenon by advising individuals to not “waste your breath on this matter as it is useless to try and evoke this characteristic out of an individual as all men are prone to the same weakness. You should let them experience the dire consequences of it rather than try to explain it to because that is the only way they can overcome it” [17]. Also, he sustained, “[One] shall meet sometime else, if the fortunes allow us to, and we shall continue this argument at a later date.” With this, he stood up and bade farewell to Freud who sat there alone for a long time afterwards, slipping back into his thoughts.
