“The Countess Cathleen” first performed in the year 1899 has been a subject of hot debate among Irish nationalists that attended the performance and later staged protest claiming the purity of Catholic church in Ireland which bore heavily in this play.
The play is centred round a character – Cathleen the Countess and depicts the time when Ireland was ravaged by famine. The play starts with the Countess and her poet and nurse offering charity to a family by giving her last farthing to save them from famine. It followed with the appearance of two Satan both disguised as merchant offered gold to buy foods in exchange of peasant’s soul which was accepted by many as an offer. However when Countess Cathleen learned the incident she simply sells her possession and barters with the devil her own soul in exchange for the return of soul of peasants. The devils with this lucrative offer got into a deal and the peasants eventually got freed. She thereby loses her life just to save the people from this ravaging crisis that once engulfed the Irish nation.
