The language English is the most spoken language in the entire world. This is a kind of fact related to English language which can’t be denied. However, this is actually not happening without having many discussions and confusions which may actually surround its extents and the different forms which are taken by the same. English as a language therefore has been viewed as an ideology. These ideologies are the ones which may have a huge influence as it is spoken. Among the different ways related to the approach to this language, it is important to have the conceptualizations related to the English Language.

Standard language ideology: This kind of ideology is something that has a very criticized position in the scholarly discourse. This is extremely common in respect to the real life. It is something that is rooted as per the belief that the language has a correct form. As per the standard language ideology, the different variety of the language can be usually taken as a standard which may be useful for the purpose of establishment of a norm as it actually comes with the perception related to power.

This is not because the variety is actually much more valuable than others, but it is because the English speakers also enjoy a higher prestige. In general, the languages are developed alongside the progress which may be related to the building of the nation, standard languages may be abnormal with respect to their development. There are some of the languages which may tend to develop progressively and also in a random manner. This may also lead to an unconscious process (Collinson & Locke, 1983). It is important to do the standardization of the language from any state or an authority. According to Haugen (1966), it can be theorized that the process of turning of a dialect into any standard language can be done in a total of four steps. The very first step as stated by Haugen (1966) is the selection of the norms which are required for the language. The next step is the codification of the norm. The third step is the elaboration of the required function and the fourth step includes the acceptance of the norm from a specific community.

The process of selection may consist of identification of a variety of languages. This may also include the process of prioritization of a specific language. The process of selection of a standard language consists of the identification and selection of any specific variety of language over another. This variety may be picked as it has a given amount of prestige, though there may be a number of different reasons for the selection of the language. It can also be illustrated that whether the language is devoid of the native speakers is not any specific factor for disqualification. There are a number of standards which have been proposed for the English language. Though the most commonly used standards for the British language includes the Standard British English and the Standard American English (Canagarajah, 2006). The standard British English is regarded in entire British Isles to be as the dialect of the people who are educated.

After the selection of the specific variant, there is a process of codification which is required to be undertaken. It is important to have the working grammar of different variant and there is a settling of the right spelling for the words in the dictionaries. Further, the codification of the standard is carried out. The standard for pronunciation had been developed by Daniel Jones (1956). The aim behind the same was to develop such a standard for the purpose of pronunciation which can be understood by the speakers in different parts of the world who may have different dialects (Swaan, 2013). The codification in case of the American English Language had been done by Noah Webster who began the classification of the American English Pronunciation and spellings of the different words which were the part of the American dictionary of the language of English.
