The location the Shard was in, was purchased in 1998 and the construction began around 2009-2010. The structure boasts an observation desk which is privately operated. The observation desk presents a completed view of the Shard and this was open to the public only as of 2013. There is a glass pyramidal tower in the Shard which has around 72 floors in it and it is here that there is a viewing gallery and also an open air observation desk. The observation deck is around 802 feet in height and replaces the Southwark Towers.
Inaugurated by the prime minister of Qatar, the Shard met its original design purpose of being multiple uses. It includes around 55,000 sq. meters in just office space. This is around 25 floors. In addition, there are around three floors of apartments as well. It sports a 17 storey hotel and has on its 68th floor a boutique which is considered to be the highest placement of a retail shop in the retail history of London. The view from the Shard continues to be a major tourist attraction and there is also an indoor gallery for the people.
