Rhetoric is the nut and bolt of a speech and writing. Politicians achieve public persuasion through their speeches, either by empirical arguments, emotional sentiments or rational appeals. Political rhetoric is not restricted to scripted speeches, rather it is an art employing various methods to influence and convince the audience (Charteris-Black, 2013). This report would analyse the use of political rhetoric in two sentences from speeches by different political leaders in their respective nations. The first sentence represents the populist political sentiment in the USA and the second sentence is from conservative party politics in Australia. Both these sentences discuss public addressing in different cultures by two political leaders and their use of rhetoric to influence their audience.

Sentence one used herein involves deliberate use of rhetoric to attack prior political leaders and media. The second sentence involves use of rhetorical devices to address the public with facts and figures defining the government’s future mission.

  Sentence 1

“The fake media will say, ‘President Trump spoke’ — you know what is – ‘President Trump spoke before a small crowd of Boy Scouts today.’ That’s some — that is some crowd. Fake media. Fake news.” (Time.com, 2017)

On 24th July 2017, President Donald Trump addressed the National Boy Scout Jamboree at the Glen Jean Summit. Trump is known for his rhetorical speeches and strong use of words. His rhetorical speech to the Boy Scouts has been criticized for its political nature. Even the head of Boy Scouts, America had to issue an apology, officially for the political rhetoric included in the speech (Time.com, 2017). The central problem of this speech is that it not only violated the core principles inspiring Boy Scouts, but also was disrespectful of other political leaders, especially Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The rhetoric used by Trump was to highlight his importance and authority by mocking previous great leaders of America and media at large (Foss, 2017). Using words like “Fake media. Fake news” he might have misled the young crowd and harmed the moral character of children.
