In order to conceptualize the essential elements of EBP nursing, the traditional approach of nursing process can be used. Significant clinical questions are developed during the diagnostic and assessment phase of the nursing process and critical review of the existing research or evidences are performed. Any specific issue or problem of the patient is identified and it proceeds with the EBP. Clinical questions are asked in a brief and organized manner so that clear understanding and answers can be provided. An extensive research in order to gather the best information is performed after identifying specific questions. Different kind of research methods are executed such as evaluating clinically relevant research, analysis of existing research and physical examination. In addition, the specific pathophysiology of the defined problem is also reviewed.
Developing a patient care plan is the next step in evidence based practice in nursing. When a critical appraisal is completed defining known and not known aspect of the problems, plan of care is established. Integration of evidences with clinical expertise ensure to providing a focused care to the patients meeting their individual needs. Evaluating the effectiveness of the care process is the final step of the implementation of evidence based practice in the nursing process. Evidence based practice is associated with established guidelines so that outcome can be evaluated. A target goal must be established for policy completion if the EBP process consist reviewing available procedures and policies. Implementing published standards in nursing by speciality organizations for better care can be helpful to direct the focus on evaluating effectiveness of evidence based practice.
