  1. When we base our arts education on photographs and reproductions of works of art, can we ever completely understand the importance of art in any given era or culture?

While looking at the photographs and reproduction of the works of art, one can definitely understand the artist’s visual language, the great eras and the visionary movements of the given period. There are courses which help in understanding the art in its true form through the photographs and reproduction of the works of art. Art is the most sublime, meaningful and redeeming creations of all civilizations. The visual language of art can be understood by color, line, composition, signs and symbols. The genres of art can be understood by having hands-on demonstration by artists having deep technical knowledge about art. In order to understand the era and visionary movements, one has to have a good artistic knowledge as it would help in recognizing and appreciating the evolution of art (Gombrich, 2011).

  1. Why must some art be seen in person to be fully understood? Why won’t photographs suffice?

Even the best reproduction of art would not be able to represent a very important element of time and space. Seeing some art in person is synonymous to seeing a unique existence of the work of art. The work of art would have survived through time and it would be mesmerizing to study the effect of time had on its physical existence. True artist would be able to understand the changes through chemical or physical analysis which would not be possible with the reproduction of the piece of art. The uniqueness of a piece of art can never be reproduced (Atkinson, 2011).
